This ‘Innovation’ with AI; in Classrooms?

Provided Teachers …, include long term with the short term goals

Innovation as we know, is quite different from Invention. The simplest example of Innovation that led to large impact on the Economy is that of ‘Container Shipment’. The story goes to one Malcolm McLean, a trucker who was disturbed by the delay in unloading cotton bales from his truck to the ships and asked himself, why the entire truckload could not be directly loaded on to the ship at one go.

The question led Mr. McLean to visualize the idea of ‘Container Loading & Shipping’.

Now that containers are commonsense in shipping, one may ask why didn’t others think of it? Perhaps others did; but likely held back by self doubts – was it feasible(?). Malcolm’s story is published on the Net describing the engineering details that locked containers to each other and then to the ship’s body as a rigid whole. It was a 10 year effort and the story goes on to say that MM sold off his profitable trucking business and bought a small shipping line to scale those containers across as a system to other ports. Eventually, the largest shipping line Maersk, bought his innovation and rest as they say, is history.

When we talk of Innovation we may say: 1% Inspiration + 9% Conviction + 90% Effort & Coordination but while words may play out the ‘process’ it gets nowhere near to describing Men whose thoughts are deeply rooted in Reality and enmeshed with the Economic Systems of the Day. (In other words, such things are not born in academies; although academies have facilitated them to solutions).

Of course the story of James Watt in textbooks but it remains a grey area between Invention and Innovation. A steam pump was already in use in ‘1698’ to draw water collected in coal mines. As per Wikipedia, one Mr Thomas Savery also used the steam’s condensing principle to create the suction vacuum to draw water into the pump and thereafter pushed up and out by ‘steam action’. Another source tells us that among Mr. Watt’s many contributions was the development of the ‘steam condenser’ as an independent unit thereby developing a closed steam cycle which even today, is the essence of steam driven power plants. The Cycle runs through Feedwater Pump to Boiler Unit to Turbines to Condenser from where it returns to the Feedwater Pump.

While AI Modelled Lesson remain unclear, ‘Inspiration Stories’, particularly the easier ones to follow being on Innovations; are fairly important because if nothing else, the ‘Big Picture’ is easily recalled by students as they learn about them as ‘Cycles’ or Systems.

If not in the Introduction then how may AI complement the lessons?

(At this point, let us keep this discussion open as Government has promised AI availability and as under trail for NEET exam coaching; probably with some end-of-lesson quizzes in a multiple answers format. )

Traditional Approach

Select a few Lesson for AI – List them

List Goals (and sub-goals) as part of Lesson Plans

Follow Teaching Methods – as presented in textbooks

AI Role in complementing the Lesson?

AI Quiz (?)

Alternative approach,

Start with Applications for each subject suited to classroom levels.

Collect Stories on Innovations that led to those Applications

Develop a Charter of based on Successful Lessons complimented by AI

Return to the Home Page or Dashboard

Is it possible?
